Office Manager - Jonna Rossow
Carillons Director - Nancy Schmitt
I am Nancy Schmitt, director of the Carillons Handbell Choir. I was born and raised in Iowa. I started taking piano lessons in 4th grade and continued piano through college. I was my high school concert choir accompanist and college small groups accompanist. I was the church organist during high school and again later in life at St. John’s Lutheran Church in El Cajon, California. I graduated from Wartburg College with a BA degree in Social Work. We arrived in San Diego, California in 1969. I began playing handbells in 1987 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in El Cajon, CA after my two children kept insisting that I come and join them in the church’s handbell choir which I did. We moved to Redding, California in 1991 and I immediately joined St. James Lutheran Handbell Choir.
Then in 1992 I became the director for the ecumenical bell ensemble, sponsored by St. James Lutheran and First Presbyterian Churches in Redding and have been doing it ever since. I enjoy taking my bell choir to festivals and conferences as well as playing at both churches, weddings, funerals and area retirement homes. After twenty-two years in elementary education I retired from my last school, Shasta Meadows Elementary School in 2004. I still have a connection with that school serving in the capacity of volunteer coordinator for members of St. James who volunteer at Shasta Meadows. My husband teaches at Shasta College and is retired Navy. We have two children and four grandchildren. When not directing or ringing bells I enjoy gardening, golfing, cross country skiing, and hiking.
Custodian - Jeff Browne
I’m Jeff Browne and have been the church custodian, since 2004. I was raised in the San Jose Bay Area, in my parent’s glass business. I learned the meaning of an honest days work and how to provide (and expect) good customer service. I married my wife (Lin) in 1971 and we raised two sons, who each got married and each gave us a grandson. Although, I suffered a near-death life-changing motorcycle accident in 1978 (losing the use of my dominant arm), I believe that God kept me here to do more… even though I’m not really sure what it is yet, or if I’m doing it. I love working in God’s house. He & I talk (He mostly listens) and it helps me deal with my situation. I find that keeping busy helps me most, so why not do something that will help people doing God’s work. I also enjoy singing. I have sung in the St. James Choir/Chorale and sing in (& am the current president of) the local Barbershop Harmony Chapter.
