The Carillons, a church based ensemble with a community feel, is an inter-generational, inter-denominational handbell ensemble sponsored St. James Lutheran Church and First Presbyterian Church of Redding, California. The musicians have a collective experience of 256 years of ringing and perform on 49 Schulmerich handbells and 43 Schulmerich Melody-chimes. The ringers are all volunteers who are passionate about the art of handbell ringing and share their enthusiasm by playing regularly at both of the sponsor churches as well as ringing at community events, weddings, funerals, retirement and nursing homes. Rehearsals are on Thursdays, 5:30 – 7 p.m. We play the first Sunday of every month from Sept. – June plus special church festival services. The bell ensemble is open to individuals in fifth grade through adult (who have one year of musical instrument experience). The Carillons have attended the Rogue Valley Handbell Festival in Medford, Oregon from 2001-2006; Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference from 2007-2015; the National Handbell Spectacular in 2004 in Norfolk, Virginia; the Area 12 Conference in 2006, 2010 and 2012; and traveled to Florida in 2008 for the International Handbell Symposium.
The Carillons and Simpson University Handbell Choir have co-sponsored the Redding Handbell Festival since 2008. The summer of 2011 the Carillons traveled to Wittenberg, Germany to help the Castle Church start a bell choir. The summer of 2014 some of the Carillons returned to Wittenberg, Germany to conduct more training with the Castle Church bell choir and attend the Wittenberg Handbell Festival.
